● These high grade Yuminashi piston rings are developed and produced by very strict Japanese standards and all rings are treated with a hard chromium plating layer (Cr) as shown on the detail below:

● The hard chromium plating layer has excellent characteristics which combine the original properties of chromium metal with the advantages of erectro-deposits. 
The main features of hard chromium plating are as follows:

1. Extremely high hardness of HmV (Micro Vickers)
800 to 1100 (cf. gray cast iron 220 to 270)

2. High melting point of approx. 1800°C
(cf. cast iron 1200°C)

3. Good thermal conductivity and corrosion
resistance.

4. Low friction factor and excellent wear resistance.
Such features are very effective in preventing
piston ring wear.

With the development of this hard chromium plating, engine performance has been greatly improved, It is applied to piston rings for medium sized engine as well as small sized engines.

● The following table shows the results of friction and wear tests on high grade cast iron and hard chromium plating. Gray cast iron was used for the mating material. As shown, it is evident that wear resistance of hard chromium plating is about 7 to 8 times higher than cast iron.

硬質クロムめっき(Cr)
硬質クロムめっきは、金属クロム本来の性質に電着物特有の性質
を兼ね備えた優れた特性をもっています。その主な特長は、
1. 硬さがきわめて高い。ビッカース硬さ800~1100
(普通鋳鉄 220~270)
2. 溶融点が高い。約1800℃(普通鋳鉄1200℃程度)
3. 熱伝導性、耐食性に優れる。
4. 摩耗係数が小さく、耐摩耗性に優れる。
などの特性を保持しているため、ピストンリングの摩耗防止対策
として非常に効果的です。
この硬質クロムめっきの開発によって、エンジン性能を大幅に飛
躍させたことは申すまでもありません。このため、小型エンジン
用ピストンリングはもとより、中型エンジンにも用いられていま
す。また、高圧圧縮機にも保油性のあるポーラスにしたクロムめ
っきが施されています。
●硬質クロムめっきの耐摩耗性
下のデータは高級鋳鉄リング材と硬質クロムめっきの摩擦摩耗試
験結果です。相手材には普通鋳鉄を使用。硬質クロムめっきは高
級鋳鉄の約7~8倍も磨耗しにくいことが、このデータからもは
っきりおわかりいただけると思います。このことは摩耗条件によ
っても大きく変わりますが、一般の正常運転でのガソリン・ディ
ーゼルエンジンに組付けられた場合でも、ほぼ同様の摩耗結果が
得られます。
