● Matching Camshaft Duration to Engine Displacement: > A short-duration camshaft performs predictably when paired with a stock piston and stock valves. However, if you upgrade to a larger piston while retaining the stock cylinder head, the factory-sized valves become a restriction. To maintain volumetric efficiency and allow the engine to breathe, you must select a camshaft with longer duration (more degrees). This keeps the valves open longer to fill the larger cylinder volume. Because the valve area remains restricted, this longer-duration profile will still act as a highly effective, torque-focused camshaft in this specific configuration.

● Big Bore / Stock Head Considerations: > When running a big bore kit with a stock cylinder head, you must compensate for the factory valve size. While low-degree cams are ideal for completely stock engines, a larger displacement engine needs more time to draw in air. Choosing a camshaft with longer duration keeps the valves open longer, eliminating the bottleneck. In a big bore/stock valve setup, a higher-degree camshaft acts as a massive torque multiplier rather than a high-RPM peak power cam.

● Camshaft Tuning Rule of Thumb: > Always view your engine as a complete system. If you increase piston size but keep your stock valves, you restrict airflow. To correct this, select a camshaft with increased duration (larger degrees). The extended valve-open time allows the larger cylinder to breathe properly. Due to the stock valve size, this longer duration will translate directly into a strong, torque-heavy powerband.

 Chief Engineer's Note: Since increasing the duration and the bore size significantly changes the cylinder filling dynamics, it will also alter the engine's volumetric efficiency curve and lean out the air/fuel mixture.

High-performance camshafts require precise tolerances. Before placing your order, you must ensure that:

  • Casting Clearance: The camshaft can physically rotate 360 degrees within your cylinder head without contacting the casting.

  • Coil Bind: Your valve springs can safely accommodate the increased valve lift.

  • Piston Clearance: You have adequate piston-to-valve clearance at maximum lift and overlap.
